Holy Week Reflection
Thursday
“Then she gave them His message.”
Have you ever been asked to deliver a message for someone else?
Did you worry about getting the message right, how the recipient would respond, or if you would remember to deliver it at all?
The type of message can affect our motivation to remember it and ensure it gets delivered. Mary Magdalene was entrusted with an important message to share.
Mary Magdalene is distinguished from other Marys in the gospels by her origin from the region of Galilee, specifically Magdala. She is also known as the disciple of Jesus, “whom he had cast out seven demons” (Luke 8:1-3).
Full Circle | Mary and Jesus
Mary’s full circle story began with her being possessed by seven demons, which tormented her relentlessly. The chaos in her life persisted until she encountered Jesus. Through His compassion, she was freed from the seven voices and received the call to follow one voice. Mary’s transformation made her one of His most devoted followers.
Mary’s dedication was evident during the crucifixion of Jesus, as she was one of the few who remained by His side while He hung on the cross. When Jesus died, it may have seemed to Mary that her journey had ended abruptly and tragically. However, her commitment to her Lord continued. We know that she, along with a few other women, went to the garden tomb to anoint Jesus’ body and discovered that He was not there.
Like many full-circle moments, Mary experienced one that launched her into another.
“Don’t cling to me,” Jesus said, “for I haven’t yet ascended to the Father. But go find my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”
Mary Magdalene found the disciples and told them, “I have seen the Lord!” Then she gave them his message. (John 20:17-18, NLT)
Mary’s deepest heartbreak was transformed into her deepest joy! The voice that brought peace and purpose into her life was alive. The risen Christ gave Mary the most important message of all time: she was to inform the others of the Good News that Jesus was alive. “The Messiah lives.”
Following her profound second encounter with Christ, Mary Magdalene is recognized as the first evangelist. She transitioned from the turmoil of being influenced by many voices to the serenity of following The Voice. Through the One Voice, she was given a God-given purpose to use her voice to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.
Holy Week Reflection
Meditate: God uses our voices.
Reflect: What are the areas in your life where you have listened to voices other than God’s? Where have you allowed these voices to silence you and prevent you from moving forward? Have you remained silent when it was time to speak up? Ask God to reveal how He wants you to use your voice for His kingdom purposes.
