“God will keep me safe.”
Do you ever want to hide?
Crawl under the table and hide from embarrassment. Dive behind a rack of clothes to hide from that person. Slip in and out of the back row in hopes of going unnoticed.
What about pure fear?
How often do we run and hide in fear for our lives?
In the pre-king days, David lived a life of hiding. He ran for many years, hiding from King Saul. David dodged many enemies in his lifetime and, at one point, was even hiding from his own son, Absalom.
David’s life was riddled with fear, and his primary refuge was God.
“The one thing I ask of the LORD – the thing I seek most – is to live in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, delighting in the LORD’s perfections and meditating in his Temple.
For he will conceal me there when troubles come; he will hide me in his sanctuary. He will place me out of reach on a high rock.” (Psalms 27:4-5, NLT, bold added for emphasis)
Psalm 27 is a mindset Psalm revealing David’s thought-out strategy for fear. Despite facing constant fear-laden challenges, David relied on God’s faithfulness expressed through three of His promises.
God WILL
God WILL keep me safe.
The NLT uses the descriptive word for God’s promise to “conceal” us. The NIV states the promise this way – God will “keep me safe in his dwelling.”
David’s “safe place” was revealed in verse four. His “safe place” was where he believed God lived, in the temple. The sanctuary symbolized the very presence of God, providing David with a profound sense of security.
God’s presence results in a sense of being concealed, safe, and hidden.
Because of Jesus and through the indwelling of His Holy Spirit, we can experience God’s presence with us at all times. We need only turn our attention to God and His presence and ask Him to wrap us in His protective shield.
God WILL hide me.
Several translations use “hide” more than once to emphasize God’s ability to throw a covering over us in a way that blind’s the enemy from seeing us.
For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion; In the secret place of His tabernacle He shall hide me; He shall set me high upon a rock. (Psalm 27:5, NKJV)
Feeling overwhelmed by fear, we often wish to hide under the covers, hoping that when we resurface, our fears will have vanished. An urge to hide can serve as a reminder, a cue to seek refuge in the comforting embrace of God’s Presence, allowing Him to be our ultimate shelter.
God WILL set me high.
“Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it.
And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows. (Matthew 10: 28-33, NLT)
Jesus taught us that we are not to be afraid. We are of great value to Him.
Priceless. Valued. Seen.
The third promise, that God will “place me out of reach on a high rock,” is a geological location that reminds us that with God, the terrors of this world will have limits. The Hebrew word for “place me out of reach” commits God to action to create a distance between us and the enemy.
God places us out of reach because He values us and will not abandon us.
David was confident that God would show up for him. For future fear purposes, David sang of God’s promises, reminding himself and others of God’s faithfulness.
We can move forward with less fear, concealed and out of reach, with God as our shelter.
I pray as you meditate on God’s promises, you sense His presence and that a draping of His protection falls over you, that you rest in the concealment of His love, and that you live like you are standing on The Rock where your enemies can not reach you. In Jesus’ name, so be it.
Meditate: God will ((fill in the blank).
Reflect: Which one of these promises do you need most? How can meditating on these promises place you in a position for God to fulfill His promises? How does God hide us? What does “setting you out of reach” look like?
Deeper: (As you read through these additional verses, ask the Spirit to give you wisdom, and teach you more about how He will meet you where you are and be your safe place). Psalm 27; 2 Chronicles 7:1-3, Psalm 91:1-4; 2 Thessalonians 3:3
