When God Doesn’t Speak

For I am with you.

What do we do when we are face down, palms open, and desperate to hear from God, but there is no voice to be heard?

We have done everything covered in the past four blogs of the Hearing God series: believed God still speaks, attuned ourselves to hear, receptive to hearing God through any method He may choose, and we feel we know the Voice of God to the best of our ability, yet nothing.

“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10, NLT)

The truth is God is never silent. He is constantly communicating His love and grace to us. We may feel like God is not speaking or His presence is far away, but He is here with us.

How do we lessen our frustration when we feel like God is being silent?

  • “Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. – Acknowledge your fears around your situation and surrender those fears to God. How big is God in comparison to what you are facing?
  • Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. Address your frustration with God’s timing and tell God what you feel. How has God already given you the courage to face one more day?
  • I will strengthen you and help you. Ask God for wisdom to navigate your not-yet-season and to support you as He has promised. Where do you most need to be strengthened?
  • I will hold you up with my victorious right hand. Accept the victorious hand God is offering you. How could God’s outcome and timing be different from yours?

We are assured that God is always with us, and His presence is His voice. Listen for the reassuring rhythm of your heartbeat, the sun rising another day, or the gift of grace through Christ’s death and resurrection. God’s voice is continually speaking and reassuring us He will not abandon us.

“So do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord. Remember the great reward it brings you! Patient endurance is what you need now so that you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised.” (Hebrews 10:35-36, NLT)

Walking through the times when we feel like God is being silent can be incredibly difficult. These seasons are not times of God withholding His Voice. These seasons are when we need to step into patient endurance until we see God’s hand bringing victory.

I pray your ears and eyes will be opened up to the Voice of God in new and fresh ways. May you sense His presence, feel comfort in knowing He is with you, and trust Him with everything you have, and at the same time, may your patience and endurance be strengthened for the journey ahead. So be it, in Jesus’ name.

Meditate: God is with me.

Reflect: Where have you missed the Voice of God today? How can gratitude play a role in hearing God’s Voice? Do you agree that God is always speaking? Why or why not? How strong is your patience? Endurance?
